Sibilla Aleramo: Representing the Maternal – Reflections and Refractions

I intend to briefly contextualise Aleramo’s writing against the backdrop of prescriptive discourses around maternity, and to explore the conflicts that abound in her representations of the maternal in her writing of Una donna. Her discourse veers from one of jouissance, rooted in the body, to one of rejection, which operates on various levels. I will also make brief reference to Matilde Serao’s writing of the maternal in the paper, as there are some commonalities worth evidencing.
